The Parts of an APA Research Paper

APA 7 separates student papers from professional manuscripts. Most coursework uses the student format, which is simpler. Check your rubric, because some instructors still ask for an abstract or a running head.

Title Page

Place the title in bold, centered, three or four lines down from the top. Below it, on separate lines, give your name, your department and university, the course number and name, your instructor and the due date.

Abstract

If an abstract is required, it goes on page two under the bold, centered label "Abstract". It is a single unindented paragraph, usually no more than 250 words, summarizing the purpose, method, findings and conclusion.

Body

Repeat the full title, bold and centered, at the top of the first page of text. Do not label the opening section "Introduction". Empirical papers then usually run Method, Results and Discussion; review papers use themed headings instead.

References

Start the reference list on a new page with the bold, centered label "References". List entries alphabetically by the first author's surname, double-spaced, with a hanging indent of 0.5 inches.

APA 7 Heading Levels

APA uses up to five heading levels. Most undergraduate papers need only the first two, and using deeper levels without a reason makes a short paper look cluttered.

Use levels in order. A Level 3 heading should only appear under a Level 2 heading, never straight after a Level 1.

The APA 7 Rules Students Most Often Get Wrong

Most lost marks come from habits carried over from APA 6 or from other styles. These are the errors markers see again and again.

Notice that the article title is in sentence case, while the journal name and volume number are in italics. The issue number in brackets is not italicized.

Page Format at a Glance

APA 7 is more flexible about fonts than earlier editions. What matters is that you choose one accessible font and use it consistently.

• Fonts: for example, Times New Roman 12, Calibri 11, Arial 11, Georgia 11 or Lucida Sans Unicode 10.
• Spacing: double-spaced throughout, including the reference list, with no extra space between paragraphs.
• Margins: one inch on all sides.
• Indents: 0.5 inches at the start of each body paragraph.
• Alignment: flush left with a ragged right edge, never fully justified.
• Page numbers: top right on every page, starting with the title page.

Tables and Figures

Each table or figure gets a bold number on the first line ("Table 1") and an italic title in title case on the line below. Notes, if needed, go underneath.

Refer to every table and figure in your text before it appears. A table nobody mentions reads as filler, and markers notice.

Reference Formats for Common Sources

Research papers lean on three source types more than any other. The patterns below cover most of what an undergraduate reference list needs.

When a webpage has no date, write "(n.d.)" in place of the year. Add a retrieval date only for pages designed to change over time, such as a live statistics dashboard.

How to Get an APA Paper Right from the Start

Formatting at the end is slow and error-prone. Building APA into your process from the first source saves hours.

1. Record full reference details, including the DOI, as you read each source.
2. Set up a template with the correct font, spacing, margins and page numbers before drafting.
3. Write in-text citations as you draft, not afterwards.
4. Build the reference list alongside the paper and keep it alphabetical.
5. Do a final match check: every citation to a reference and every reference to a citation.

Reference managers help, but check their output. They often get capitalization of article titles wrong and miss issue numbers.
